Has anybody else had this problem: I printed out the letter provided on this website and tucked it in my mailbox where it could clearly be seen by the letter carrier. It’s been several days now and it’s still there. Suggestions? Is there somewhere I can send it directly to Canada Post?

We live in a condo in Victoria. Since I placed a small red dot (no letter) inside our mail delivery box several weeks ago, we have received NO unaddressed mail, while others in the condo are getting lots. What a great idea! Quick and so easy! Thank you! I have been passing the message along.

The mail carrier for my condo downtown Vancouver put up a notice in our mail room, and provided red dots with a note that said “If you do not want to receive unaddressed mail put a red dot ON THE INSIDE of your mailbox.

Some people have put them on the outside of the mailbox, but the carrier cannot see the dot when they have the door open to sort the mail. It needs to be ON THE INSIDE beside your suite number.

Your carrier is doing what most of us would like to do, by assisting customers with the red dots, however, he is risking disciplinary action from Canada Post if he is found out. The unaddressed admail business brings in 20% of the Corporation’s sales revenue and is the area the Corporation would like to develop further, since the “real” mail that we once delivered is diminishing, fast. Our recent Christmas operation is a fine example. During the 60’s and ’70’s, the post office actually hired a “Christmas helper” for two weeks, for every letter carrier in London, Ontario, where I worked at the time. There was so much mail that one person could not carry it all. This past Christmas, there were only two Mondays that were slightly heavier than a normal Monday and the rest of the days were as normal.

I’ll bet there is some anxiety going on at Corporate Headquarters over this campaign and Canada Post is not likely to sit back and watch its employees scuttle the ship before their eyes, so carriers need to take a passive stance on this and let the customer ensure the proper steps are taken to get a red dot designation.

How can Canada Post discipline letter carrier’s for letting people know of a program that Canada Post endorses?
I still believe this campaign is a self serving one. The amount of ads I personally get from Canada Post is nothing compared to what I get in my local Friday free paper (yesterday 19 ads comprising 139 pages (Toronto Sun size). In addition in the paper were 12 full pages of ads and 45 ads of less than a page plus 5 pages of classifieds. Number of pages in the paper was 36. This past week I received 6 ads from Canada Post (2 single half sheet ads for a pizza place, 1 extra large size ad for a housing development, 1 one third page for a car mechanic , 1 one third sheet ad for a real estate company and a coupon pack with 7 half sheets for various companies)
In talking to my letter carrier (GTA) he told me that letter carriers in his station receive payment for flyers (some carriers make up to $5,000 a year) and they also get a preparatory time value of on average 20 minutes per letter carrier route.
I asked him what he thought of this program, his words were “how would you like someone advocating taking money out of your pocket”
Based on that, I’ll happily accept advertising.

I would like to address some of the comments that have been made.

I am an RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier) delivering mail to Community Mailboxes for Canada Post. Unlike the Letter Carriers who do door to door delivery and get paid for each flyer that they deliver I do not get paid anything for delivering flyers but will lose my job if I refuse to deliver them. That goes for all RSMC’s across Canada.

I was unaware of the Red Dot Campaign until I recently covered a friends route and received a Red Dot Campaign letter in a customers mailbox. I am also sure that 99% of the people I work with are unaware as well. I have given the letter to a supervisor at my station and hopefully they will add this customer to the do not deliver unaddressed admail list. The reason your mail carrier is not picking up the letter is probably because he/she does not have a clue that the letter was put there for him/her. If your letter carrier is not picking up the letter from your mailbox then I would suggest placing it in the outgoing mail slot. That way he/she will notice it and hopefully bring it to his/her supervisor. Or else just bring the letter into the local Post Office, ask for a supervisor and hand it to them directly.

Also, please place the Red Dot inside your mailbox so that it is visible when the CMB is open. I will be taping a letter to all my CMB’s informing my customers of this campaign because I believe in customer choice.

Hopefully I will not face any disciplinary action. How can they discipline me for making customers aware of a program that they endorse. It is also highly unlikely that my job will disappear just because less people want unaddressed admail. I will still be needed to deliver the more important addressed mail.

Thanks to everyone who is jumping on board with this campaign. I am hoping to reduce the amount of time and energy I spend delivering ridiculous amounts of flyers that I am not even paid for.

Postie.. I agree with everything you say. However, just for discussion. If a Letter Carrier tells customers about this red dot campaign (which I don’t recommend) which simply points to Canada Post’s “Customer Choice Policy”, how can this Carrier face discipline? Its still the customer’s choice as described in the policy name itself. The campaign does not force anyone into putting up a sign or dot. Its simply informs. The choice still remains the same.

Would I get in trouble if a customer asked me verbally “How do I stop this junk” and I respond by telling them about the policy. Isn’t that the same thing. I never heard of a company getting mad at employees for informing customers of company policy. Its our duty to tell customers about policy when asked. Its the same if a customer asks about delivery standards. If I know, I should respond. Ideally thats what Canada Posts wants. Employees that know the products and services we provide. Thats the “Modern Post” right?

Just wondering do you have any of the material (for example the letter, the red dot “No Junk Mail” in French available? My French isn’t perfect enough that I’d be comfortable translating them by myself, but maybe I could work together with a more fluently bilingual friend to come up with a translation of at least the essentials in the other official Canadian language, if there isn’t already one available.
