WOOOO-HOOOOO Who!! Why don’t you tell Beth how you REALLY feel?

A little harsh I’d say and I hope you aren’t a letter carrier. I am not aware of the facts surrounding this firing, so I can’t give a meaningful comment. However, taken strictly on the face of Beth’s information, Canada Post won’t have a leg to stand on when this disciplinary action goes before a grievance committee.

Canada Post is constantly harrassing its workers in various ways in order to try to fracture the Union’s strength and to intimidate the employees. I know many carriers in my office would love to see an end to junk mail, fully realizing the impact it would have on our jobs, because Canada Post seems to show us no concern when we complain of the heavy weight loads these things can impose on us on some days. If we could get some co-operation with more relay boxes to handle the crap without breaking our backs and legs and feet, we might be more amenable to the ever increasing volumes of this stuff.

I am the terminated letter carrier in Eastern Canada. Two days before arbitration Canada Post offered a deal. I was reinstated but am in the process of retiring. Canada Post has terminated dozens of letter carriers across the country for alleged violations of the comsumers choice policy. In most cases the employees have been attempting to help the public by informing them of the requirements needed to cease ad mail. Don’t believe Canada Post when they pretend to support any anti-ad mail campaigns. Their bottom line is profit and they will give lip service to hoodwink the public.

Canada Post’s “Green Policy” mentions nothing about reducing ad mail. It’s just a lip service policy so the public will think they care. They’re a joke!

I must say , what ever you’re doing , Beth, is still a good step towards ending this
junk mail madness. I am presently a Canada post letter carrier and I hate this junk mail addition to my already heavy mail satchel. This is the agenda of Canada Post to make money from this , and we can get fired for not delivering these items but not for non delivery to an address that requested “No Junk Mail”
I myself have written up (200) “No Junk Mail ” labels and left them in mailboxes (conspiciously) for the occupants to stick them on their boxes . Out of these 200 …50 residences responded , some residence did not understand what they were for. Unfortunately Canada Post don’t do enough to curb the overage. The money we are paid is 2 cents per piece , Canada Post is paid 10 cents per piece by the Advertiser. If there are 4 or more different sets of flyers , putting these flyers together (collating) will be involved and the carrier will sure run into overtime, this really piss-off management. Thus resulting harassment onto the carrier . Now you know why I hate Junk mail, it is not worth the money .

Hey, Brian. If the only thing keeping Canada Post floating is Junk mail, then let them die.

The fact is; Canada Post hired 1000’s of supervisors to oversee/ inforce this new 1/3 flyer delivery system. Do the math! Lets just eliminate the people who are riding the letter-carriers satchels and we’ll be just fine. Here are some rough figures…Our depot had 2 supervisors prior to the 1/3 flyer system — we now have 4. In our city we have 10 depots…ours being the smallest. So if we just say they’ve added an average of 3 supervisors per depot — that’s 30 supervisors in our city alone! Some more rough numbers. I figure that would be about 150 supervisors in B.C — 100 in Alberta — 30 in Saskatchewan — 35 Manitoba — 350 in Ontario — 250 in Quebec — 100 in the Maratimes, NWT, INUVIK, & Nanuvit combined. So, we have approx. 1000 surplus supervisors (that would not be missed should they be terminated). @ $60,000.00 per year in Salary + approx 40,000.00 per year in benefits (conservative estimates). Now we have $100,000.00 per year x 1000 supervisors. That is $100,000,000.00 all by itself. Even inspite of this waste Canada Post has made profit every single year since it became a crown corp. So what is all this talk about flyers being the future? Canada Post could easily trim the fat in Ottawa as well…then the letter carriers wouldn’t have to carry the flyers and the entire non-working work-force at the same time.

There is your real story! It’s time Canada Post was investigated for their dead-weight and waste.

One final note: Canada Post also could move forward 1000 times faster if it learned to better treat it’s employees. Anyone who has worked at Canada Post knows this is the worst part of the job. Canada post is run by many ex-military people who bring in their military mentality with them. Anyone who doesn’t believe this has never worked there…or hasn’t been there long enough to know.

Now it’s all out in the open…will anyone in parliment do anything about it? I think we know that answer.
